Marks of Change

Words & Art by Keisha Rowe

Recently, at an art class we did a wonderful exercise with mark making which really moved me out of my comfort zone. I’m usually so attached to my black fine liners, but we were asked to create expressive marks with basic watercolours and oil pastels and told to be experimental; to let go of being so precious over our work. Letting go was both exciting and scary at the same time.

Amongst the constant comparisons with others, starting this course has reconnected me with a curiosity that I remembered having during my art foundation course. As we continue to practice these tasks to build up our folders as art teachers, I almost feel that this will be just as much as a learning and transformative experience for me as it will be for the young people.
