the Red Book
The Red Ampersand Book is collection of creative, sculptural ampersands that engage the senses and the imagination.
Most of the design work I’ve done has been produced entirely on a computer for a 2D product: posters, magazines, booklets, leaflets, and logos.
The impetus for this book came out of a desire to make graphic design physical, tactile, edible, audible, interactive, emotional.
I aim to show that design can be art, and art can have a function. Some of these projects are the result of spontaneous experiments, and some came about after careful planning, design, and prototyping.
I chose to hand letter everything in this book for the same reasons I made all of the objects by hand – I find it far more gratifying than sitting in front of a computer screen, and it makes for a more unique, personal experience.
So why ampersands? The ampersand is a fascinating character with a rich history that can manifest in many shapes, and an elegant symbol for connection & compromise. Also, I think ampersands are really pretty and I’m kind of obsessed with them.
